Steve Carell Rocks College in Rooster Trailer

The Office alum reinvents himself on campus in this new HBO drama.

He will unleash the horses again in a new comedy for HBO.

Steve Carell takes a joyfully existential break at university in the trailer for Rooster, a new HBO series created by Bill Lawrence (creator of Ted Lasso and Shrinking among others) and his faithful accomplice Matt Tarses (Scrubs, Bad Monkey). A bittersweet comedy in ten episodes, carried by a Carell visibly freewheeling and delighted to be so.

The actor plays Greg Russo, a successful writer who comes to settle on a university campus to support his daughter Katie (Charly Clive, from The Lazarus Project), who is in the midst of an emotional wreck. She has just left her fickle husband, a professor played by Phil Dunster (Ted Lasso), who is cheating on her with a master’s student (Lauren Tsai, from Legion). Atmosphere. But very quickly, the trailer (see below) suggests that Greg is not only there to repair his daughter’s life…

He too is suffocating. Tired of his reality, his responsibilities, and perhaps himself. When the students start calling him “Rooster” – after the flamboyant hero of his novels – Greg decides to take part in the game: he becomes this XXL character that he himself invented…

Around Steve Carell, the cast lines up solid: Danielle Deadwyler (Station Eleven), John C. McGinley, but also a gallery of prestigious guests with Connie Britton, Alan Ruck (Succession), Rory Scovel (Ground Floor, Undateable), Robby Hoffman (Hacks) and Annie Mumolo (Bridesmaids).

Rooster promises to be an existential comedy that is both funny and melancholic, perfectly tailored for Steve Carell.

Broadcast scheduled for Sunday March 8 on HBO, with one episode per week until May 10, and to be seen in France in streaming on HBO Max.
