Task season 2 will see Mahershala Ali take on Mark Ruffalo

The story of the sequel is revealed as the HBO crime series strengthens its cast with the arrival of an Oscar-winning heavyweight.

Duel at the top in sight.

Mahershala Ali joins season 2 of Task, where he will opposite Mark Ruffalo.

A major arrival for the HBO detective series, currently in pre-production. Launched in September 2025, the series was quickly renewed for a second season, after the acclaimed first season of the dark and tense thriller signed by the creator of Mare of Easttown, Brad Inglesby.

In these new episodes, Tom Brandis (Ruffalo) takes charge of a new task force. But the more the investigation progresses, the more the lines become blurred: it is difficult to know who the target really is, HBO is already teasing. Opposite him, Mahershala Ali will play Eddie Barnes, a seasoned DEA agent based in Philadelphia, whose team will collide head-on with that of Brandis. A clash that promises to spark.

For now, Ali is the first new name confirmed for Season 2, aside from Ruffalo.

The first season notably brought together Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Fabien Frankel, and Martha Plimpton.

An HBO regular, Mahershala Ali had already starred there in season 3 of True Detective, a performance which earned him an Emmy nomination. For several years, the Oscar-winning actor for Moonlight has been waiting for Marvel to decide to start filming the new Blade film. The project now seems buried. And he moves on.

At the creation of this season 2 of Task, we will find Brad Inglesby, also screenwriter, executive producer and showrunner.
