The film that… by Thomas Bidegain (Suddenly alone)

The screenwriter of A Prophet, already director of Cowboys, gives us the films that marked his cinephile.

On the occasion of the release of his second production, the “survival” successful Suddenly alone worn by Gilles Lellouche and Mélanie Thierry, Thomas Bidegain agreed to give himself up for First in the game of “film that…” ? Let’s go !

The film that…

…changed your life?

The hunter’s night. I went to the movies for free, because my friend’s mother was an usherette. I saw a lot of films like that around 8 or 9 years old, especially repertory films. Around 12 years old, I discovered The hunter’s night and I wanted to see him again. Once, twice, three times… I said to myself : ‘That’s what I want to do.’ I knew nothing about it but it impressed me enormously.

…gives you nightmares?

Chucky. I dreamed of this doll afterwards, but hey, I think it’s just because I saw it too young. As I get older, it doesn’t matter to me anymore.

…made you fall in love with his actor or actress?

Debra Winger In Officer and Gentleman or in Tender Passions. Because she plays something very… “in life”, and at the same time a little bit above. I really like what she gives off, it’s quite special.

…immediately puts you in a good mood?

Any film from Marx Brothers. It’s funny, I recently noticed that every difficult moment in my life, I immersed myself in their film. I can’t explain it, but it works!

…is for you a timeless masterpiece?

I must have been 11 when my father showed me Citizen Kane. We are there, we look and suddenly I see him crying. It was a different time, eh, dads, they didn’t cry! Since then, I have seen it again and again to understand that. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to make cinema: to provoke this kind of emotion.

… is considered a classic but leaves you completely unmoved?

Children of Paradise ? It always seemed a little bombastic to me, whereas the films with Gabin from the time were stronger, they hooked me better.

… deserves to be seen and re-watched?

I insist but Tender Passions. James L. Brooks is the guy who, years later, created The Simpsons. A great guy. There are couple stories, this mother-daughter relationship… I find that rich! Whether you are interested in melodrama or love or family stories, there is always something that takes over.

…was forbidden to you and that you saw in secret?

I had run away from home to go see Poltergeist (laughs). I had seen the advert with this little girl who was being kidnapped by the TV… I was young, I had been told no, but it intrigued me too much!

Gilles Lellouche is currently on the cover of Premiere (n°546). Here is the trailer for Suddenly alonewhich has just been released in cinemas:
