The international press puts a spotlight on Johnny Depp in San Sebastian

Journalists who had traveled for the big premiere of “Modi” expressed their dissatisfaction.

It was the big event of the San Sebastian festival this Tuesday. Johnny Depp in person was in the Basque Country to present Modihis first film as director in over 25 years (the last time was The Brave in 1997). A biopic dedicated to the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, played on screen by Riccardo Scamarcio. An event in itself, which attracted many journalists to the Spanish city.

And many were disillusioned when they discovered, upon arriving there, that Johnny Depp was not going to do an interview, but only group meetings of 15 minutes, and not even solo, but accompanied by his actors. Press briefings, in short, where 12 international journalists from the specialized press were invited in groups of six. Reluctantly accepting these interviews, which were unlikely to result in good interviews, they were dealt a blow when it was explained to them that there would ultimately only be one press briefing for everyone!

The independent Italian reporter, Marco Consoli, was one of the journalists invited. He says that all the journalists concerned then decided, in protest, to withdraw and not participate in this general junket : “When we were told that the only option was this meeting with everyone, we all chose not to speak to Johnny and not to report on the film.”

A fed-up movement which follows an open letter, published during the last Venice Film Festival, where more than a hundred international journalists signed this missive denouncing the lack of access to actors and actresses, warning that film journalism was “ in danger of extinction » if studios and publicists continued to treat them like this.

Johnny Depphe still benefited from a big ovation in San Sebastian during the presentation of Modi.
