These 3 times Jodie Foster toured in France before Private life
The Hollywood actress uses the language of Molière with impressive dexterity. And yet, she filmed very little at our house. And even less in French.
Before causing a sensation in Cannes in Privacyby Rebecca Zlotowski, her first major role played entirely in French, Jodie Foster already had a very personal link with the language of Molière. The American star has a perfect command of French. She grew up at the Lycée Français de Los Angeles, followed all her schooling in immersion, and often explains that this education shaped her cultural identity. Despite everything, until now it had only accepted rare French-speaking films, often secondary or discreet. Privacy will therefore be an important moment in Jodie Foster’s career. But three times, she had already played – and even sung – in French. Back in pictures.
1. Me, blue flower (1977)
At only 14 years old, Jodie Foster made a real French film, in French, in the role of Isabelle Tristan, known as “Blue Flower”, opposite Bernard Giraudeau and Jean Yanne. Little tasty detail: Jodie Foster, then revelation of Taxi Driversings herself in French on the film’s soundtrack, entitled “When I Looked At Your Face”. The film directed by Éric Le Hung had 300,000 admissions in France at the time.
2. The Blood of Others (1984)
For the first time, Simone de Beauvoir accepted that one of her works be adapted for the big screen. Directed by Claude Chabrol, this Franco-Canadian film is shot in France. But if Jodie Foster; 22 years old, plays the leading role, opposite a young Lambert Wilson, it should be noted that the filming takes place… in English. Jodie Foster dubs herself in French (as she often does) but despite the French production, she does not play in French the role of Hélène, torn between life and the resistance, during the German Occupation of the Second World War.
3. A long engagement Sunday (2004)
Jean-Pierre Jeunet gave her a brief but truly French role, that of Élodie Gordes, a woman hard hit by the war and wife of Jean-Pierre Darroussin. We hear a slight American accent in her. This will be his last role in France, for 20 years and before Privacy.
