Tom Hanks explains Woody’s baldness in Toy Story 5
“He was manipulated too excessively…”
It’s a small detail that has gone viral on social networks.
Two months ago, the trailer for Toy Story 5 came out, showing in passing…Woody’s baldness!
Since 1995, Tom Hanks has played the voice of the sheriff. But thirty years later, Woody has aged strangely and is losing his hair… For the actor Forrest Gumpit is obviously not baldness strictly speaking. The little hole behind the sheriff’s head would be the result of his success:
“Woody was manipulated too excessively”, says Tom Hanks to Entertainment Weeklynot without a certain malice.
“You put a rubber hat on a rubber head over and over and over, something will get damaged.”he continues. “So, yes, he has… let’s say a worn area on the back of his head.”
At the end of Toy Story 4we remember that Woody became the hero of abandoned toys. Today, he’s back as Jessie and the whole gang face a terrible threat: technology. An intrigue that fits into its time. Bonnie’s parents gave their daughter a Lilypad – a connected tablet, in the shape of a frog – star among 8 year old children. While toys are left aside…
But in addition to the baldness, it is a small beer belly that the protagonist shows in the trailer. Here too, Hanks rushes to Woody’s rescue:
“This is not a plastic toy! It’s made of stuffing and fabric, and this material breaks down over time!”
Buzz, meanwhile, has no baldness… But his interpreter reveals that an opening sequence shows a shipping crate filled with high-tech Buzz Lightyear emerging from their packaging on a desert island. Tim Allen will therefore play 51 different voices. “Finally, I have more scenes than Woody” he confirmed.
Joan Cusack (Jessie), Annie Potts (Bo Peep), Wallace Shawn (Rex) and the whole little gang will also be back in their respective roles. But it will also welcome newcomers, like Greta Lee (nominated for the Golden Globes for best actress for Past Lives) who will interpret the voice of the famous tablet, Lilypador even Mykal-Michelle Harris (Raven), to play Blaze, a little girl who lives in the house where Jessie and Emily once lived.
Toy Story 5 will be released on June 17 in French cinemas.
