The Institute: Stephen King's new adapted series unveils an exciting trailer

What does the Stephen King Institute give? (critical)

This faithful adaptation of the novel published in 2020 takes up the good ideas but also the faults. A very “Kingian” and very effective mystery, which will keep you in suspense all summer.

Does every story of Stephen King Do you really need to be adapted to the screen?

The question deserves to be asked … Without a doubt, this serial version of The Institute was not essential. But at the same time, the stories of King are still as engaging …

She takes us to a horrible lab where children gifted with telepathy and telekinesis are locked up … kidnapped in the middle of the night, the young prodigy Luke Ellis wakes up in this strange place, populated by young people who arrived there in the same way as him, and who, like him, have extraordinary capacities. Welcome to The Institutea disturbing center led by the mysterious Mrs Sigsbywhere children are subject to brutal tests intended to stimulate their gifts. But for what purpose? And above all, who pulls the strings in the shade?

The series, produced by MGM, arrives today on HBO Max in France and offers a Faithful adaptation King’s novel published in 2020.

Luke is no longer 12 years old (he is here an older teenager), but apart from this detail, this first season largely takes up the major axes of the book. Fans of the master of horror will not be disoriented.

We are clearly in known ground: Stephen King in the text. Already read, already seen, but effective. It’s simple, well put together, sometimes engaging, but – like the novel – the series gives the impression of unrolling a best of archetypes Kingiens in automatic pilot mode. We find in particular his tenderness for youth and this resistance of childhood in the face of the violence of the adult world, adding an interesting questioning on the notion of humanity …

From the first episodes, the plot seems marked, even telephone. And yet it works: the whole remains very addictivethe mystery is revealed by very rhythmic touches, and the revelations that fall into the second half (basically the last 3 episodes), although not very original, effectively maintain tension. What keep you in suspense until the end of the summer!

The series is also visually successfulwith a cold and clinical photo that sticks well to the atmosphere. And above all, the casting is solid. Children are excellent, and Ben Barnes (Westworld) imposes his ordinary charisma while Mary-Louise Parker (WEDS) is elusive of the institute’s operations.

This first season ends in opening up to a larger mythology than that of the novel. Obviously, MGM intends to build on The Institute in the years to come. It remains to be hoped that the extended universe will surprise us a little more …

The Institute, season 1 in 8 episodes, to see on HBO Max in France from July 17, 2025, one episode per week
