Kevin Costner to play Bill Clinton in historical series
It would be a great historical drama, reenacting real UN humanitarian missions.
Kevin Costner and Leonardo DiCaprio could well team up for an ambitious series that will shake up the small screen.
Entitled United, it has the particularity of benefiting from the direct support… of the United Nations. Kevin Costner will play the role of former President Bill Clinton, while DiCaprio, also an executive producer, will oversee the project alongside Costner. It should not appear on the screen.
The series, which promises to be a historical drama, reenacting real UN humanitarian missions, starting with the 1999 operation in East Timor. According to Deadline, Chukwudi Iwuji could also join the cast to play Kofi Annan, the former secretary general of the UN.
The first season is expected to focus on the United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET), set up to oversee the 1999 independence referendum after decades of violence and political repression. A former Portuguese colony annexed by Indonesia in 1975, East Timor has gone through major military and humanitarian crises. In the late 1990s, a UN-organized vote confirmed independence despite threats from pro-Indonesian militias.
The ensuing reprisals destroyed infrastructure and caused at least 1,400 deaths. Unable to control the violence, Indonesia let the UN intervene with the Australian-led International Force, guiding the region toward sovereignty, achieved in 2002. Bill Clinton played a key diplomatic role, coordinating with other leaders to calm tensions.
David Raymond, writer and director known for Night Hunter, will direct the series. A long-time partner of the UN through its Creative Community Outreach initiative, Raymond is dedicated to telling stories that celebrate global cooperation and humanitarian sacrifice.
Filming is expected to begin in 2026, between Atlanta and Spain, with Fifth Season in charge of global distribution.
