In line with Leila and her brothers, Woman and child attacks Iranian patriarchal society. In Leila and her brothersSaeed Roustaee already featured a strong female character, alone facing the harshness of the world. It’s the same spine that we find in this new film, but this time in a feverish thriller. It is not her brothers that the heroine carries at arm’s length, but her son, as the name of the work indicates.
Like the Seeds of the wild fig tree by Mohammad Rasoulof, awarded at Cannes in 2024, Iranian cinema knows how to produce edifying portraits of women, echoing current events. And Woman and child clearly fits into this register.
Saeed Roustaee reunites with two of his favorite actors: Parinaz Izadyar, who plays the main role, and Payman Maadi, in the role of the boyfriend. The actors already shared the poster of two films by the filmmaker: Leila and her brothers And Life and a Day. Alongside them, we find another Iranian actress, Soha Niasti (The Actor).
