Why Christian Bale went through an ordeal while filming The Bride!

In order to mutate into Frankenstein in The Bride! and becoming Maggie Gyllenhaal’s monster, actor Christian Bale agreed to undergo a real ordeal.
In an interview given to Entertainment Weeklyhe explains that he spent six hours a day in the makeup chair transforming himself into the creature. His partner, Jessie Buckley, who plays the title role, had to spend an hour and a half in makeup.
Christian Bale confides:
“I screamed like crazy, every day. Just to release that despair, all that restraint you have to display when you stay still for so long.” thus explaining how he managed to “stay sane” during these endless hours.
Bale adds:
“I didn’t want to do it while driving to work because I thought I might cause an accident. And I didn’t want to do it alone because I thought everyone would think I was going crazy. Oh man, I’m telling you, in the end the whole team joined in because people could hear us screaming. We’d open the doors, and gradually, kind of like the Bridal Revolution, a few people were like, ‘Can we do this too ?’ And at the end there were about 30 people who heard us and ran to the makeup trailer to be part of the thing and scream too.”.

The Bride! by Maggie Gyllenhaal is released in theaters this March 4, 2026 in France.
