Brian Cox freewheeling: he destroys Quentin Tarantino, Johnny Depp, Gary Oldman…
In promotion for his first film as a director, the Succession actor also attacks Margot Robbie, Ian McKellen and Edward Norton.
Brian Cox’s legendary outspokenness strikes again. The 79-year-old British actor likes to tackle his colleagues. But there, he surpassed himself. In an interview given to Timeshe pulls out all the stops and a good part of the profession takes it for granted.
The star of Succession particularly attacks Quentin Tarantino, whom he describes as “dummy“, which is reminiscent of the “He’s a rascal” by Jean-Luc Godard addressed to the American director:
“I am more egalitarian than most directors, those who present themselves as visionaries. I like to honor the actor’s performance. When you watch a Quentin Tarantino film, you only see Quentin Tarantino. I’m not like that. I don’t want to do this.”
It should be noted that Brian Cox is giving this interview to promote Glenrothanhis first film as a director, a comedy-drama about two brothers who reconcile which he co-stars with Alan Cumming. However, as Jordan Ruimy of Word of Reel mischievously points out, Glenrothan was coolly received by critics during its presentation in Toronto and has a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
But that doesn’t stop Cox from getting out the sulphate. He also attacks Johnny Depp, revealing that he turned down a role in Pirates of the Caribbean. Without any regrets, because he “is an actor”so bloated, so overrated“.
Everyone goes through it. Edward Norton is “a pain in the ass“,Kevin Spacey”a stupid man“.Ian McKellen’s game?”Not to my taste“. Gary Oldman’s Oscar-winning performance as Churchill in Darkest Hour ? “A demagogic mush“.
In the article of TimesBrian Cox even attacks a film he hasn’t seen, the new version of Stormwind with Margot Robbie. Launched on this subject, Cox begins to imitate the Australian accent (Margot Robbie is Australian), before explaining that she “is way too beautiful for this role.” “I think we should see more of her gypsy side, but I shouldn’t judge. Maybe it’s a brilliant film.”
The only one spared from his diatribe? Jeremy Strong, his former partner Succession whom he had flayed at the time because of his immoderate taste for method acting. But the compliment is necessarily accompanied by a little tackle:
“I don’t want to talk about Jeremy again, it caused me a lot of problems and he begged me to stop talking about him. He’s a good actor, Jeremy. He’s a wonderful actor. What bothers me is just the bullshit that comes with it.”
Should we laugh or be dismayed by Brian Cox’s outbursts? In any case, the person concerned does not care about the consequences:
“My wife keeps telling me: ‘Brian, be careful‘. But I say to myself, nothing to worry about, I don’t want to pay attention anymore. I will be 80 this year. Shit ! I say what I want.”
Glenrothan will be released on April 17 in the UK. It does not have a distributor in France at the moment. Trailer:
