Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are “moving at full speed” according to their producer
Rae Sanchini assures that the scripts are brilliant and is very confident for the rest of the saga.
We know it, Avatar 3 did not perform as well as the first two parts of the saga at the box office. With 1.4 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, Of Fire and Ashes is still the second biggest success of 2025 in cinema. However, as pointed out Variety last February, including marketing, it cost $500 million. Which means Disney paid itself back but didn’t make a big profit.
The big question is therefore whether the studio will finance the next two films and allow James Cameron to conclude his story in the cinema (rather than telling the end in a press conference!). Avatar 4 is supposed to be released on December 19, 2029 and Avatar 5 on December 17, 2031. Officially, the green light has not yet been given, but we are getting closer and closer.
After James Cameron’s recent comments on the continuation of the saga during the Saturn Awards, it is producer Rae Sanchini who gives reassuring news. During an interview given to Inverse on the sidelines of a visit to the studios of Lightstorm Entertainment, the company founded by Cameron, she took stock of the issues and the technological challenge to be taken up with the teams in charge of the visual effects, recently awarded at the Oscars.
“We are really moving towards a more accessible platform“, explains Sanchini. The system implemented by Lightstorm, designed by Cameron’s teams and perfected by Wēta Digital artists, was “custom made“and asked”lots of training for recruited staff“. We read between the lines that the idea is to be able to reduce production costs for future films.
The producer details:
“We are currently preparing the calendar. We work hard on it, we put in place the budget, the calendar, the planning, and a new process for them. For our part, we are moving forward at full speed.”
The release dates ofAvatar 4 And Avatar 5 remain”provisional“according to Rae Sanchini, but they could be confirmed”in the near future“.”We have the scripts, they are brilliant. As far as I’m concerned, we’re moving forward.”
