A Prophet, season 2: “Malik is not a new Tony Montana!”

The Canal+ series should have a sequel. “Season 1 was act 1 of a story which will unfold afterwards,” the creators confide to Première, before detailing their plan.

Jacques Audiard had not responded to his Prophet. But Malik El Djebena will continue his journey to Marseille, in the Canal+ series.

Season 1, which ends today on the encrypted channel, does not mark the end of its story. A season 2 is already in the pipeline, even if it is still waiting to be made official.

“It’s act 1 of a story that will unfold afterwards,” co-creator Nicolas Peufaillit confides to Première, before confirming: “It’s only the first season in truth.”

With Abdel Raouf Dafri, they are “right in the middle of thinking about season 2”. But one thing is already clear: “Malik is not – and has never been – ambitious in the criminal world. He first wants to get out of domination. For him, being a trafficker is a means, not an end. It allows him to touch a life that he has fantasized about for years.”

Thus, the two creators assure that “Malik is not a new Tony Montana (the hero of Scarface). Neither the one from the film, nor the one from the series. He is more a Michael Corleone (from The Godfather) at least the one from the first film, in this sense where he knows that there can be a form of curse in living this lifestyle. Malik is an orphan who has been mistreated for too long…”

Spoiler alert!

Another revelation: the sequel will radically change the setting.

“When season 2 opens, Malik will no longer be in prison. The hardest part will still lie ahead for him…”

Which suggests that this sequel to Un Prophète on Canal+ will be less of a prison series, and more of a fresco of emancipation, almost in the spirit of The Count of Monte Cristo. It is no coincidence that we see the Château d’If in the last shot of season 1, from the Baumettes prison.

“It’s a very strong scene,” Mamadou Sidibé explains to Première. “It symbolizes what the character has been looking for from the beginning: freedom. To finally be able to move forward, to no longer be under the influence of others. He is a very intelligent character. He identifies with Edmond Dantès, because they live the same experience.” And to add:

“Literature serves as an outlet for him in this very violent environment. Monte-Cristo by Dumas, Le Père Goriot by Balzac and The Stranger by Camus, these are three books that accompany him and in which he recognizes himself.”

Revelation of the series, the young Mamadou Sidibé really wants to “continue” the adventure. His comrade Sami Bouajila too. Even if, more experienced, he tempers:

“We know the principle of the series. We have to wait for the broadcast and the audiences. We’ll see…”

The entire season 1 of Un Prophète can be seen right now on Canal+.
