Disney fired almost all of Marvel’s visuals teams
More than 1,000 employees are affected by the Walt Disney Company’s restructuring plan.
A month after taking over from Bob Iger as Disney’s big boss, Josh D’Amaro announced massive layoffs. According to a memo cited by Forbesthe idea is to “streamline operations” by letting go of a thousand employees, spread across all branches of the company.
But, according to the specialist media, one division will particularly suffer. And it’s Marvel. Marvel will lose staff in all areas, in New York as in Burbank, whether cinema, TV production, comics, financial or legal sectors. Almost the entire team responsible for visuals at Marvel Studios was thanked.
These are artists, particularly in charge of illustrations, character design or settings, who worked on Marvel films and series. Some for more than ten years.
A small team was maintained. She will be in charge of recruiting external resources project by project. This reduction in staff would largely be due to the reduction in releases already planned by the studio. In 2027, only one film and one series are on Marvel’s schedule. According to Forbesthese layoffs would not be linked to the rise of artificial intelligence.
In his memo, Josh D’Amaro explains to his employees:
“I know it’s difficult. These decisions do not reflect their contribution, nor the overall health of the company. Rather, they reflect our ongoing assessment of efficient use of our resources in order to be able to reinvest our business.”
