Disney has developed an alternative to IMAX for Avengers: Doomsday

A new Disney certification, as a quality label for theaters, to establish an alternative to IMAX.

It’s a concept that has only just emerged.

A few days ago, during CinemaCon, the Walt Disney Company announced its collaboration with cinema operators around the world on a new certification program: Infinity Vision. A label created by Disney which aims to inform the public of high-end large format cinemas meeting certain technical criteria: a screen width of at least 15 meters, laser projection and an immersive sound system of at least 7.1 Dolby.

Nearly 5,500 screens worldwide – three times more than the number of Imax theaters – would meet the standards of this new label, private sources report. Bloombergasking not to be named because all this has not yet been communicated by the Disney group.

Why did you create this label?

The first reason is the war between the studios to be able to broadcast their fan films in as many IMAX theaters as possible. However, we already know thatAvengers: Doomsday will have limited access to IMAX screens the weekend of its release in the United States (December 18), since Dune 3 – which comes out the same weekend – has negotiated an exclusive deal with IMAX and will have priority access to IMAX theaters, depriving the Marvel blockbuster of a large number of premium screens.

That being said, Disney remains the leading distributor of IMAX, like these regular collaborations, notably with the release of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu scheduled in France for May 20.

To date, Disney has 75 Infinity Vision certified theaters in the United States and 300 internationally. Avengers: Doomsday will be released on December 16, 2026 in France.
