15 years later, Kenneth Branagh wants to come back to film Thor

“I would like to complete this story,” the British filmmaker confides today.

What if Kenneth Branagh returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

The director of the first Thor (2011) clearly does not say no, quite the contrary. In an interview with Business Insiderhe confides his desire to find the god of thunder:

Part of me would like to close my relationship with this character. I always wanted to do more, I even had a few ideas after the first film…”

Ideas that would move away from the pure blockbuster towards something more twilight:

More in the spirit of James Mangold’s magnificent Logan. I’d like to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own final story, one that takes Thor into a glorious sunset…”

Kenneth Branagh also reveals why he never returned to direct the sequels:

Marvel shoots are intense. Post-production even more… it’s incredibly exciting, but very intense. I needed to take a step back. Kevin Feige was very understanding, as was the cast. I needed a break.”

Since his departure, the saga has continued without him: Alan Taylor signed Thor: The Dark Worldbefore Taika Waititi regains control Thor: Ragnarok And Thor: Love and Thunder.

Branagh followed all this with interest: “I watched the sequels with a mixture of great pride and wonder at the directions taken. But his desire remains intact:

It would be very beautiful to accompany these characters towards their own sunset.”

There remains a major obstacle: the MCU already has a well-advanced roadmap. “They’re already very far into the future of this universe, so I imagine their plans are set,” he recognizes as fatalistic. “But there would be something very beautiful to find in a conclusion for these characters, these stories and these actors.”
