Grey’s Anatomy is heading to Texas: a new spin-off ordered

This will be the fourth series derived from the medical saga created by Shonda Rhimes.

More than twenty years after its debut, the Grey’s Anatomy universe continues to expand.

The American channel ABC has officially ordered a new spin-off of the cult medical series by Shonda Rhimes, which will be broadcast during the next TV season (2026-2027).

Still without an official title, this new series will take place in a rural medical center in west Texas, an arid and oil-rich region. A place presented as “the last chance to obtain care before miles of nothingness”. The project is described as a grittier and edgier medical drama, centering on a team facing extreme situations in a remote region of the United States.

At the creation, we find Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis, current showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy since season 20. Ellen Pompeo, historical interpreter of Meredith Grey, will also be executive producer of the project alongside Betsy Beers, long-time collaborator of Rhimes.

For the moment, ABC has not specified whether emblematic characters from Grey’s Anatomy will appear in this new series, nor if Meredith Gray will travel to Texas. Meg Marinis, herself a native Texan, rejoices:

“I’m incredibly excited to expand the Grey’s Anatomy universe. This opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that retain the heart, emotion and human connections that audiences have loved for over twenty years, all in my home state of Texas.”

It will be the fourth spin-off of the franchise after Private Practice, Station 19 and the web mini-series Grey’s Anatomy: B-Team. Meanwhile, the parent series has just completed its 22nd season and will continue next year with its 23rd season.
