Kevin Feige finally promises the “real” Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day
The boss of Marvel Studios promises a Peter Parker dedicated to his job as a hero, “sad, who listens to the police frequency and goes out to use his powers with responsibility…”
After six films and years spent in Tony Stark’s technological shadow, Spider-Man will finally become… Spider-Man.
In any case, this is the promise made by Kevin Feige, boss of Marvel Studios, who ensures in Empire that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be the first MCU film to fully embrace the classic version of the comic book hero.
“This is the first Spider-Man movie we’re doing in the MCU that really focuses on the classic elements of the character. He lives in a small, sad apartment, he listens to the police frequency and he goes out to use his powers responsibly…“
A statement that may please some fans. Since his debut in the MCU, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has often been criticized for his dependence on Tony Stark, his ultra-technological gadgets and the total absence of Uncle Ben in his story.
Marvel obviously still has no intention of introducing this cult figure into the MCU. The famous speech “With great power comes great responsibility” has already been transferred to Aunt May in Spider-Man: No Way Home. But the end of the film completely reshuffled the cards. After the spell cast by Doctor Strange, everyone forgot the existence of Peter Parker. No more friends. More support. No more Tony Stark. No more Aunt May. Result : Brand New Day starts with a Peter Parker totally isolated and obsessed with his role as Spider-Man. Director Destin Daniel Cretton even describes a hero who now devotes “his whole existence at his work”.
“I find this theme incredibly universal. Many people, after a loss, react by saying, ‘Too bad. I’m just going to work. That’s all I’m going to do.’ And obviously, that’s not a very healthy way of looking at things…“
In other words: Marvel finally seems to want to tell a more down-to-earth, more melancholy story and closer to the Spider-Man of the comics.
A return to basics which could also allow the MCU to find a more human version of the character, far from the high-tech armor and the cosmic issues which ended up transforming Peter Parker into a mini-Iron Man.
In the casting of Spider-Man: Brand New Daywe will obviously find Tom Holland, but also Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando and Tramell Tillman.
Cinema release on July 29, 2026 in France. The film will be part of Phase 6 of the MCU.
