Box office France: the new Star Wars already in failure, The Mandalorian and Grogu collapses
The new Star Wars is struggling in the second week, while the Obsession phenomenon is confirmed.
The Force is not with Baby Yoda…
Still leader of the French box office this week, The Mandalorian and Grogu retains first place… but difficult to see it as a victory.
With only 220,681 entries, The Mandalorian and Grogu remains number 1 but the findings are severe. The film’s attendance dropped by more than 50% between its first and second weeks of release, a sign that the film is not inspiring. Above all, the new Star Wars has attracted just over 700,000 spectators since its release in French cinemas. It’s very little. Too little even for a franchise of this magnitude. For comparison, even Solo: A Star Wars Story did better at the same stage of its operation, with nearly 900,000 admissions after two weeks and a higher average per theater (in 2018). The spin-off dedicated to the smuggler finally ended its career with around 1.5 million admissions. At this rate, The Mandalorian and Grogu shouldn’t even reach that score. The milestone of one million tickets sold today seems to constitute its maximum objective at the end of the journey.
Behind him, Michael continues his impressive cavalcade. The biopic devoted to Michael Jackson still attracts nearly 200,000 additional spectators and has now crossed the symbolic milestone of 5 million admissions. The film is now set to double The Kid (5,242,769 admissions in 2007) to become the greatest success in history for a biopic in France. The film also continues its hunt for the biggest hits of the year 2026, with its sights set on Marsupilami And Super Mario Galaxycurrently leading the French annual box office.
While waiting for the arrival of Backroomsthe phenomenon of independent horror is indeed called Obsession. Curry Barker’s first feature film adds another 153,725 admissions to its tally for a total of 543,879 spectators. Better yet, its attendance only dropped by 16% in the third week, a remarkable performance which even allowed it to climb onto the podium in the ranking. Driven by very solid word of mouth, the film also boasts the best average per copy in the Top 10 with 396 spectators per screen. Proof that the enthusiasm surrounding this small production is anything but a flash in the pan.
Among the new features, The object of the crime by Agnès Jaoui begins in sixth place with 101,447 entries. An honorable launch, but significantly lower than that of Public squareco-directed with Jean-Pierre Bacri, which attracted more than 182,000 spectators during its first week in 2018 before ending its career with more than 600,000 admissions.
Finally, we will note among the new features the small start of Colony by South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho starts with around 68,000 admissions. A modest score which remains far from the performance of Last train to Busanthe film which revealed the filmmaker to the general public and established his name among the major figures of Korean genre cinema.
