Super Mario Galaxy becomes the first billionaire film of 2026

The animated box office signed Illumination and Nintendo has just crossed the symbolic threshold of one billion dollars in global box office revenue.

And another gold coin for Mario!

With over $1 billion in global revenue, Super Mario Galaxy officially becomes the first film released in 2026 to cross the symbolic milestone of 9 zero at the box office.

Produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination and Nintendo, this new animated adventure confirms the incredible popularity of the mustachioed plumber on the big screen. A performance all the more impressive as the film would have cost only $110 million, a relatively modest budget for an animated production of this scale.

This is the first billionaire film since Avatar: Of Fire and Ashesreleased last December (1.4 billion at the end of the run).

Directed once again by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, this sequel still remains quite far from Super Mario Bros. the moviewho ended his career with nearly $1.4 billion in global revenue in 2023.

To date, Super Mario Galaxy dominates the 2026 box office ahead of the biopic Michael (888 million), the space adventure Last Chance Project (680 million) and The Devil Wears Prada 2 (663 million).
