Doctor Who: the BBC turns the page on Russell Davies and cancels the Christmas episode
“You’ll have to wait a little longer to see Doctor Who…”
Thunderbolt in the Whoniverse.
Doctor Who is taking a leap into the unknown, as the BBC has confirmed that it will ultimately not produce the traditional Christmas special episode, which was announced in recent months. More importantly, the British public broadcaster has decided to put the series back out for tender in order to find new production partners.
In a press release published this Wednesday, the BBC announced the official departure of showrunner Russell T Davies and studio Bad Wolf, who had produced the series since its return in 2023. “Doctor Who remains an essential brand for the BBC and this call for tenders demonstrates our long-term commitment to the series so that audiences can continue to enjoy it for many years,” specifies the audiovisual group.
A significant decision, which shows the desire of the English channel to turn the page. Direct consequence: the famous Christmas episode will ultimately not take place. It was to introduce the new Doctor after the departure of Ncuti Gatwa. A decision that the BBC recognizes as difficult but which it justifies by its desire to prepare the future of the franchise. Rather than filling the wait with an isolated episode, the channel prefers to concentrate its efforts on the next incarnation of the series.

On Instagram, Russell T Davies himself confirmed his departure. Already at the helm of Doctor Who between 2005 and 2010, then returning in 2023 as part of the partnership between the BBC and Disney+, the screenwriter believes that the time has come to hand over the baton:
“There won’t be a Christmas episode. We came up with this idea to ensure the show had a future when no one knew what was going to happen. Now that we know, there’s no need for one. You’ll have to wait a little longer to see Doctor Who again, but you’ll be waiting for more than just a special episode.”
Davies also wanted to put an end to the rumors that had been circulating for several months regarding the next Doctor. “There was no script. I never wrote this episode. And no actor was approached to play the next Doctor,” he says.
As a result, the future has never been so unclear for the British series, since the return of the Tardis at the beginning of the century. In May 2025, Ncuti Gatwa left the job, after only two seasons in the role of the Doctor. In his final episode, his Doctor regenerated in the guise of Billie Piper, the unforgettable Rose Tyler from the 2005 and 2006 seasons. A surprise appearance which was, however, never officially presented as the arrival of a new incarnation of the Doctor.
Obviously, with the new showrunner, the series will take a new direction. A new era which should take a little time to be written. We won’t see Doctor Who on screens again until 2027 at the earliest…
