The Battle of Gaulle: a flamboyant trailer for the diptych

Box office France: De Gaulle and Scary Movie 6 neck and neck

Michael breaks the record for the biggest success in France for a biopic, Obsession creates buzz and Star Wars continues to fall.

It’s the big French historical blockbuster of the summer.

The Battle of Gaulle: The Iron Age achieved a smooth start with 380,000 admissions for its first week of operation in just over 560 theaters. The feature film directed by Simon Abkarian is not the success hoped for by Pathé, who invested heavily in this diptych (the second part I write your name will be released in early July).

The French film by Antonin Badury is even ahead of the ranking by Scary Movie 6.

The American horror parody takes the lead at the French box office, for a few more tickets.

But with a little less than 400,000 spectators coming to laugh in some 500 theaters, the Wayans comedy still had the weakest start of the saga in France, far from the standards of previous films: in 2000, the first opus attracted almost 1.5 million admissions to begin with (3.7 million at the end). The sequel started at 1 million in 2001 (ending at 2 million). Scary Movie 3 had a first week of 700,000 admissions in 2003 (1.3 million in the end). And Scary Movie 4 (the 5th being released directly on VOD) had a first week with 500,000 tickets in 2006 (800,000 admissions at the end).

The real big success of the moment is good Obsession. While waiting for the phenomenon Backrooms arrives in France (June 17), the small, low-budget indie horror film retains its third place in its fourth week. With 215,000 new admissions in 344 theaters, Curry Barker’s hit explodes here with attendance up 52% over one week. A development which testifies to the enormous buzz which now surrounds the film, which stands at almost 800,000 admissions in France.

Having fallen to fourth place in the rankings, after six weeks on the podium, Michael still continues to move the crowds: there are still 200,000 new fans of the King of Pop who went to see the biopic in 729 cinemas (a drop of only -4%). Michael passes the 5.25 million mark and officially becomes the most viewed biopic of all time in France, doubling The Kid and its 5.24 million entries.

Now down to fifth place, the trend is not rising for the new Star Warswhich continues to underperform here and in the rest of the world. 180,000 tickets sold in the third week for Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Groguin more than 700 theaters, it is a drop of -19%. The film has still not reached a million admissions in France, light years away from The Rise of Skywalkerwhich had more than 5 million admissions at the same stage in 2019.

Finally, two French films screened at Cannes complete this top 10, with slightly disappointing scores: The Electric Venuswhich opened the 79th edition of the festival, barely passed 580,000 admissions after 4 weeks in theaters, while the new feature film by Agnès Jaoui did not take off: The object of the crime is under 200,000 entries after two weeks.
