Michael becomes the biggest musical biopic of all time and dethrones Bohemian Rhapsody
The film dedicated to Michael Jackson has just broken a historic record at the world box office. With more than $932 million in revenue, it exceeds that devoted to Queen and Freddie Mercury.
The phenomenon Michael continues its triumphant march in theaters around the world. The biopic directed by Antoine Fuqua officially surpassed $932.2 million in worldwide revenue this weekend, becoming the biggest success in history for a musical biopic.
The film thus dethrones Bohemian Rhapsodywhich until now held the record with $911 million in worldwide revenue thanks to the incredible run of the feature film dedicated to Freddie Mercury and the group Queen.
Beyond this record, Michael also stands out as the biggest success in the history of the Lionsgate studio. The film recently surpassed $865 million in Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013), which until then occupied first place in the studio’s rankings.
Worn by Jaafar Jackson, nephew of Michael Jackson who plays his uncle on screen, the film made $362.8 million in North America and $569.4 million internationally.
Its launch had already made an impression. With $97.2 million collected in its first weekend in the United States and Canada, Michael had signed the best start in history for a biopic and for a musical film, notably erasing the 60.2 million dollars of Straight Outta Compton. Internationally, the film had added $121.6 million in its first weekend.
And the adventure is far from over. With several territories still to be exploited and a solid showing in theaters, the feature film is now aiming for a new symbolic milestone: a billion dollars in worldwide revenue. An extremely rare feat for a biopic.
Faced with such success, Lionsgate has already confirmed the development of a sequel. Antoine Fuqua has revealed that enough scenes have been filmed to tell the second part of the King of Pop’s life in a new film.
Nearly twenty years after his death, Michael Jackson proves that he remains one of the greatest icons of global popular culture. And his biopic is now on track to become the first biographical musical film in history to cross $1 billion at the box office.
