Josh Hartnett Takes on a Sea Monster in New Netflix Series: Trailer

He will face a mysterious sea creature that is terrorizing an isolated village in Newfoundland, off the coast of Canada.

Josh Hartnett will star in a new Netflix series in the fall.

In Below, a new fantasy drama, he will face a mysterious sea creature that is terrorizing an isolated village in Newfoundland.

The streamer has just revealed the first trailer for Below, created by Jesse McKeown (writer of The Umbrella Academy). Josh Hartnett plays Calvin Penney, a fisherman whose peaceful Newfoundland village is suddenly struck by a series of unexplained events. When a mysterious creature emerges from the depths begins to spread terror, Calvin decides to investigate with the inhabitants to uncover the secret hidden beneath the ocean.

The trailer deliberately maintains the mystery by never revealing the monster. However, we see the community living to the rhythm of worrying phenomena, while Calvin warns everyone: they must now avoid the sea. The last images show a house submerged in the middle of the waves, victim of attacks by the invisible creature.

Josh Hartnett shares the bill with Mackenzie Davis, but also Charlie Heaton, Natasha Henstridge, Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, Willow Kean and Rohan Campbell. Mackenzie Davis also describes her duo with Hartnett as that of “two partner cops tasked with solving a mysterious case.”

Creator Jesse McKeown says he wanted to exploit Newfoundland’s natural setting: “It’s a unique landscape, wild, dangerous, isolated and, in many ways, frightening.” The filming took place entirely on location. To prepare for his role, Josh Hartnett listened to a local radio station every day, while Charlie Heaton spent time in the bars of Saint John to immerse himself in the culture of the region.

All eight episodes of Below will be available on Netflix on October 8, 2026.
