First official photo of Elijah Wood’s return as Frodo in The Hunt for Gollum

Warner Bros. just sent some images from New Zealand. And among the new photos is a familiar silhouette in the Shire…

This week was Hobbit Day.

Like every year, the American Tolkien Society in 1978 marks the joint birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins on September 22.

And this Hobbit Day has a special flavor this year, since it is celebrated while filming in the Shire!

Warner Bros. therefore sent from New Zealand some previously unseen images of the current production of Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

We discover in particular the Shire and several new Hobbits… but especially the return of Frodo, played by Elijah Wood.

A first image shows the character in front of the famous Cul-de-Sac door, as he prepares to enter the Baggins house. However, Frodo’s face does not appear: the character is photographed from behind. The last time Elijah Wood played Frodo Baggins on screen was in 2012 in the film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journeywhere he made a brief appearance at the start of the feature film.

The actor will be one of several former members of the saga to return to Middle Earth. Andy Serkis will direct the film while reprising the role of Gollum, while Ian McKellen will once again be Gandalf and Lee Pace will reunite with Thranduil, the king of the Elves whom he played in The Hobbit.

The film will also welcome several newcomers. Jamie Dornan will play the Ranger, a younger version of Aragorn, played at the time by Viggo Mortensen, while Leo Woodall will play a new character named Halvard, and Kate Winslet will play Marigol.

The story will take place between the events of Hobbit and those of Lord of the Rings. The film will notably follow Aragorn and Gandalf in their hunt for Gollum, while Sauron also seeks to find the creature to get his hands on the One Ring.

The screenplay is by Arty Papageorgiou, Phoebe Gittins, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released in cinemas in France on December 15, 2027.
