Woody Allen’s new film will begin filming in Madrid

The American director returns to Spain to film his new feature film, in English, from October 5, starring Marton Csokas and Jemima Kirke.

It will be 4 years since Woody Allen released a new film in theaters. And this is the first time in his career that the filmmaker has stayed away from cinemas for such a long time.

Still persona non grata in Hollywood, Woody Allen continues his career in Europe.

While his previous film in Paris, Stroke of luckpresented in Venice in 2023, was his 50th feature film and has long been presented as his last, Woody Allen ultimately continues to film. The director will return behind the camera next week, starting October 5 in Madrid.

A film still without a title… and without a star. In the casting, we will find at the head of the poster the New Zealand actor Marton Csokas (The Lord of the Rings, The Equalizer) and the Anglo-American actress Jemima Kirke (Girls, Sex Education), as well as Jakob Oftebro (Hamilton, Kon-Tiki), Peter Vives (The Time in Between, Velvet) and Alexi Wasser (Messy, Girls).

WestEnd Films has just acquired international rights and will be responsible for selling the film to distributors around the world.

Written and directed by Woody Allen, this new feature film will be a contemporary comedy shot in English.

Filming will take place in the city of Madrid and its region. This will be the filmmaker’s third film shot in Spain, after Vicky Cristina Barcelona in 2008 and Rifkin’s Festival in 2020. But it will be a first for the filmmaker in Madrid.

“I will be very happy to come back to Spain. This will be the third time I’ve shot there and the first time I’ll have the opportunity to make a film in Madrid, a city I’ve always loved“, explains the director, who turned 90 last year.

The film will be produced by Madrid-based Wanda Vision, Gravier Productions, Woody Allen’s production company, and 3SIX9 Studios. The artistic direction will notably bring together José Luis Alcaine, Sonia Grande and Alain Bainée.

WestEnd Films had already secured international sales for Stroke of luckpresented in Venice and sold in more than 30 countries. The company also represents a catalog of 25 Woody Allen films, including Midnight in Paris, Match Point And Blue Jasmine.

“We are delighted to continue our long-standing collaboration with Woody Allen and his team. After the very favorable international reception of ‘Coup de chance’, we are very happy to present his new film to buyers.”said Maya Amsellem, Managing Director of WestEnd Films.

Release expected in 2027. No date announced yet.
