Steven Spielberg takes over the helm of Transformers: an 8th film in sight!

The director of Jurassic Park will supervise all creative aspects of the next film, while Paramount is already preparing the eighth part of the saga.

This is the first major project announced by the new Skydance studio.

Steven Spielberg, who helped launch the franchise as executive producer of the first Michael Bay films, will now take over the franchise Transformers.

According to information from Variety, the filmmaker will supervise all creative aspects of the next live-action feature film, in collaboration with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura. This Transformers 8 is currently in development at Paramount. The screenplay will be written by Jason Fuchs and the story will take place in our time. For the rest, Paramount is still carefully keeping it a secret.

Spielberg had already worked on the first two films in the franchise in a similar capacity. He notably accompanied Michael Bay, director of the first five episodes. The role that Bay could possibly play in this eighth installment remains unknown for the moment. But a priori, Steven Spielberg should not direct it.

The filmmaker’s return comes in a particular context for Paramount. He was one of the first people met by Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, the new bosses of the studio after the merger between Paramount and Skydance. The discussions finally led to this return alongside Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

The franchise Transformers has already grossed $5.4 billion at the worldwide box office since the first film released in 2007. But the next episode will have to deal without Shia LaBeouf, who will not return. Discussions regarding other cast members are still in their early stages.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian, Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto and Hasbro will produce this new film.

On the other hand, another highly anticipated project will ultimately not see the light of day. The crossover Transformers – G.I. Joelong discussed by Paramount, is abandoned. The studio is now developing a new film G.I. Joe in collaboration with Danny McBride.
