They wanted to reinvent the global financial system. They ended up accused of embezzling billions of dollars.

Julia Garner and Anthony Boyle star in The Altruists, a Netflix miniseries that explores the rise and fall of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, “two brilliant, ambitious young idealists who attempted to reinvent the international financial system overnight… before being accused of embezzling $8 billion and becoming the Bonnie and Clyde of their generation.”

A year after the success of Évanouis at the cinema, Julia Garner returns to streaming and Netflix, the platform which revealed her to the general public thanks to Ozark. She plays Caroline Ellison, former executive of Alameda Research, a trading company closely linked to FTX. Opposite her, Anthony Boyle portrays Sam Bankman-Fried, founder of the cryptocurrency exchange platform. The starting point of the series has all the makings of a contemporary tragedy. Brilliant, ambitious and idealistic, Bankman-Fried and Ellison believed they could shake up global finance in record time. But their rise turned to scandal when the FTX empire collapsed, leading to accusations of billions of dollars of fraud. In 2023, Bankman-Fried was convicted of seven counts related to fraud and conspiracy, before being sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The Altruists is created, written and directed by Graham Moore, who also executive produces. The series is inspired by New York Magazine articles by Kevin T. Dugan and Jen Wieczner. It will have eight episodes.

Rounding out the cast are Paul Reiser, as Joe Bankman, Robin Weigert, as Barbara Fried, and Maddie Hasson, who plays Lauren Remington Platt.

All eight episodes of The Altruists will be available in France on Netflix on November 8.
