Box office 1st day: Karma and Marion Cotillard seduce the public
Guillaume Canet’s thriller narrowly beats the animated film The Island of Memories.
Karma successfully launched. 40,000 spectators came this Wednesday to discover the new collaboration by Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet. A figure which climbs to 62,000 counting the numerous previews which preceded the release of this highly anticipated film, presented last May at the Cannes Film Festival, out of competition.
This is a very good score for a drama of this type, prohibited for children under 12, comparable to the start ofAnatomy of a fall. In 2023, Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or had 47,000 entries for its first day, and 53,000 AVP included. If word of mouth follows, Karma could have a good career at the French box office.
And the competition was tough during this school holiday period, with two animated films following closely behind and completing the podium: The Island of Memories (38,000 tickets) and Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Halloween (33,000).
Behind this trio, we find the new DC, Clayface (26,000 entries), The King of the game by Eric Judor (12,000) and La Gradiva which attracted 10,000 curious people with an excellent average number of spectators per copy. The film distributed by Tandem is riding high on its Critics’ Week Grand Prix at Cannes, rave reviews and real public enthusiasm driven by its 8,000 preview entries. We will follow the rest of his career in the gym very closely.
It should be noted that six new releases exceeded 10,000 tickets this Wednesday, which has only happened eight times since 2020. And this despite the evening curfew measures which disrupted certain city center cinemas in large metropolises.
Curiosity of the classification, Klara and the sunthe new film by Taika Waititi with Jenna Ortega, is in 10th place with only 395 admissions. You will undoubtedly discover the French release of the film, which was not shown to the press, by reading these lines…
