Carrie will have a season 2… and more!
Prime Video officially renews the series adapted from Stephen King. Its creator plans a story over three seasons, with new characters with psychic powers…
Carrie White hasn’t said her last word…
And it’s a surprise! Unlike Stephen King’s novel and Brian De Palma’s film, the young martyred high school student survived the nightmarish finale on Prime Video…
After a brilliant first season, using Carrie’s story to tell the story of harassment in a moving and edifying way, Mike Flanagan’s series turned the end upside down to shift towards a fantastic chronicle, an origin story doped with people gifted with superpowers. Carrie from Heroes or the X-Men? We’re going straight there!
The next step is also validated: the Amazon platform has made the sequel official. There will be Carrie 2, stronger and more powerful than ever. Now free of her mother and her own barriers, she will unleash her powers to escape the Adelaide clan, played by Kate Siegel. Flanagan’s wife and regular collaborator indeed appeared in the finale as the big villain of the sequel, at the head of a mysterious group of women endowed with psychic powers. They have spotted Carrie’s abilities and now plan to find her. But she is no longer alone: the young girl is assisted by Emaline (Thalia Dudek), a powerful astral projector, who took control of the young girl’s body and used her powers to massacre the students of her high school. The two teenagers fled, leaving behind a devastated city…
We are a long way from the intimate and all-consuming atmosphere of Stephen King… And yet, the writer is totally in agreement with this new path taken by his Carrie: “I can’t wait for the public to discover what awaits Carrie White. Mike Flanagan and I are enthusiastic about what comes next. It promises to be thrilling” enthuses King in an official message.
Either.
The series will therefore go far beyond the famous prom.
The finale of this first season opens a door to a much larger universe. It should be remembered that Mike Flanagan has been working on a new adaptation of The Dark Tower by Stephen King for ages. He will also remake The Mist. Suffice to say that the filmmaker could well be concocting a King Universe which would culminate in The Dark Tower… In the meantime, he admits to being inspired by the novel The Institute, in which King already imagined a secret organization which kidnaps children endowed with psychic powers in order to exploit them for clandestine operations. The group of women introduced in the series offers a variation on this idea (it should be noted that there is already a series The Institute on Prime Video, and season 2 will be released next month). The showrunner explains, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
“Leaving a door open was a priority. I wanted to make sure we concluded this season in a satisfying way. But since this universe is so vast and the role of Carrie still offers so many possibilities, I also wondered what we might discover on the other side of that door…”
Carrie will come back. Mike Flanagan does not lack ambition. Carrie’s excellent streaming audiences (1.26 billion minutes viewed in its first week according to Nielsen) should help it achieve its intentions.
“For 50 years, audiences have known and been interested in the story of Carrie White. From the start, we imagined a story that goes well beyond the prom, and I am extremely grateful to Stephen for his trust and support in exploring what comes next,” said the creator, while Amazon ordered season 2.
No date has yet been communicated.
