A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could last 12 seasons!
The showrunner of the spin-off would like to make a “Boyhood” – by Richard Linklater – by filming Dunk & Egg over three decades.
The new big soap opera in the Game of Thrones universe has just started… and it could last a long time.
Co-creator of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, alongside George RR Martin, Ira Parker already has crazy ambitions. He imagines a long series, capable of extending over more than ten seasons, spread over nearly thirty years.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ira Parker – also executive producer of House of the Dragon – confided that, if he had the power, he would validate 12 seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, produced in successive blocks over the long term. Its objective: to adapt the entire lives of Dunk and Egg, the two heroes at the heart of the series. An ambition made possible, according to him, by the discussions he had with George RR Martin, who has already “drawn the broad outlines” of 12 short stories devoted to the duo…
For Parker, the strength of the project lies above all in the dynamic between its two main characters:
“We have one of the essential ingredients: two unusual characters — like Arya and the Hound, or Brienne and Podrick — who walk together and talk. That’s a big part of what made Game of Thrones work for me. I hope that’s what allows us to tell as much of it as possible.”
In fact, HBO is much more cautious. The Warner Bros. channel. has already officially ordered season 2. But no more. According to Parker, the group is currently considering adapting the three existing stories. But the showrunner sees further. Much further:
“I’d do four seasons now, four more in ten years, and then four more ten years later — to follow them throughout their lives, a bit like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood.”
This does not lack ambition! And which reinforces the idea that the first season, in 6 short episodes, is a form of prologue intended to introduce these new characters.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place approximately 89 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series follows Ser Duncan the Great, a knight-errant of humble origins, and Aegon Targaryen, nicknamed Egg, long before his accession to the throne. To date, George RR Martin has published 3 short stories centered on their adventures, while regularly mentioning his intention to write others. But will he really do it, when volume 6 of the Game of Thrones saga has been desired for almost 20 years?
Ira Parker wants to be confident: “Even if we don’t have all the details of each story, we know the main canonical stages of the lives of Dunk and Egg. We would therefore not find ourselves in the same situation as the Game of Thrones series (which had to continue without a book after season 5). And George shared with me the outlines of twelve additional stories!”
For now, HBO has not yet renewed the series beyond season 2. But obviously, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was not designed as a simple fun spin-off, but as a long-term saga,
