Belphégor season 2: should we hope for a return of the mask?
The creators are quite categorical: “No, a priori, this is not planned…”
HBO Max’s new event fiction, Belphegor, only lasts four episodes.
A dense and curly mini-series… but the shadow of the mask hangs over the idea of a sequel. The creators, Thomas Mansuy and Nils Antoine Sambuc, respond to us with a smile:
“I find it hard to imagine how we could do Belphégor 2: the return of the mask after the end of the series…” he laughs. Before specifying:
“No, a priori, it is not planned: the characters we show have completed their stories, and for the moment, we do not have a plot to extend them.”
Spoiler alert!
No season 2 in perspective for Belphégor, but Thomas Mansuy explains that the ending possibly opens a door: “Afterwards, at the end, Hafsa is still there, and we understand that the mask of Belphégor returns to its origins, in Iraq. So why not consider a sequel in the form of an international adventure? Belphégor and the Temple of Doom! (laughs).”
The project is clearly not in the pipeline, also because from the start, the idea was to make a mini-series. Nils Antoine Sambuc recalls:
“The broadcaster wanted event fiction, hence a tighter format, in 4×52 minutes. A real mini-series.”
In short: Belphégor was designed as a unique work, with no initial desire to expand its universe.
“But in the world of series, everything is always possible. Who knows?” slides Sambuc to conclude.
