“A slap”: this French film with Tahar Rahim is one of Ryan Coogler’s favorites

The director of Black Panther and Creed (and soon Sinners) discovered it at the Cannes Film Festival.

In the first issue currently in kiosks (with Alain Chabat on the cover for his Asterix series), Ryan Coogler tells us about Sinnershis next film with Michael B. Jordan. A history of vampires in the southern United States during prohibition. And during the discussion, the filmmaker behind the two Black Panther, Fruitvale Station And Creedtold us to be crazy about a French film, Grand Prix at Cannes in 2009: “ The truth is that filmmakers are inspired by things that often have no connection with their current project. One of my favorite films is A prophet by Jacques Audiard. Masterpiece that I discovered in 2009, the first time I come to the Cannes Film Festival-and the first time I get out of the United States, by the way. A slap. I don’t even understand how it is possible to make such a film. »»

He specifies that ” Years later, one of the producers told me that Jacques was influenced by American television, and in particular dramas crime, genre The Wire… I was sawn. Once you know, thematic, it takes on its full meaning, but I found it delightfully ironic: one of the most moving cinematographic experiences of my life was created by a French filmmaker, marked by the television production of my country of origin. It opened my eyes to the fact that inspiration can really come from anywhere. »»
