Alien: Romulus gets off to a monstrous start at the US box office
Xenomorphs are still popular. Fede Álvarez’s film does not dethrone Prometheus’ record despite everything.
It’s still party time at Disney. After a 2023 punctuated by failures (The Marvels, The Haunted Mansion…) the studio continues to chain successes in 2024. Since Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdomlast May and until Deadpool and Wolverinepassing by Inside Out 2Disney crushes the global and American box office. Same story this week with Alien: Romulus.
Fede Álvarez’s horror film has grossed $41.5 million for its opening weekend in the United States. An excellent score that allows the film to take the lead at the US box office ahead of Deadpool 3. Alien: Romulus does better than Alien: Covenant ($36 million) in 2017 and Alien vs. Predator ($38.3 million) in 2004, but did not reach the heights of Prometheus ($51 million in revenue, best start for the franchise in the US).
The second best launch of the saga Alien also collected $66.7 million in the rest of the world for a global opening beyond $108.2 million. Already a success for Disney which would have invested a production budget of $80 million.
Falling to second place in the American top, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman add 29 million dollars in their fourth week, with attendance seriously decreasing (almost -50%). But Deadpool and Wolverine still accumulates $545.8 million in North America and $1.15 billion in worldwide receipts.
In the rest of the US box office, it should be noted that the romantic drama Nevermore: It Ends With Us takes another $24 million in week 2 and approaches the $100 million mark in the United States, and $180 million worldwide. In other words, a big hit for Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios, who put $25 million into the film starring Blake Lively.
Borderlands is not at such a party. The sci-fi epic starring Cate Blanchett has only grossed $13 million at the US box office after two weeks. A huge flop for this blockbuster that cost $115 million.
