Andrew Scott is shocking in the Elsinore trailer

The actor from Ripley and Fleabag plays Ian Charleson, hero of Chariots of Fire who died of AIDS in 1990, in this moving drama, already very noticed in the race for the Oscars.

Will Tom Cruise win the Oscar for Best Actor? Nothing is less certain…

Because Andrew Scott has just made a remarkable entry into the race with Elsinorefor which Focus Features revealed the trailer today. And the English actor Ripley And Fleabag delivers a performance that is already causing a lot of talk.

Directed by Simon Stone and written by Stephen Beresford (Pride), Elsinore tells the true story of Ian Charleson, British star revealed by Chariots of Fire. In 1989, while seriously ill with AIDS, Charleson landed the role of Hamlet at the National Theater in London after the resounding departure of Daniel Day-Lewis, who had interrupted a performance before leaving the production for good.

The trailer shows Charleson preparing for this role he has always dreamed of, while his health deteriorates. Despite illness and complications linked to AIDS, he refuses to give up. He died in January 1990, aged just 40, a few weeks after leaving production.

For Andrew Scott, the role is necessarily special: the actor himself played Hamlet on stage in Robert Icke’s production in 2017, a performance which earned him a Laurence Olivier Award.

And Elsinore already arrives with heavy arguments in the awards season. After its world premiere in Telluride, the film won the International People’s Choice Award in Toronto. Early reviews also praised Scott’s performance, who quickly found himself named among the contenders for the next Oscars.

Olivia Colman, Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, David Dawson, Matthew Beard, Joe Locke, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson and Peter Mullan complete the cast.

Elsinore will be released in American theaters from November 20, 2026. French release on March 10, 2027.
