Laborious takeoff for Supergirl at the American box office
Toy Story 5 remains untouchable at the top of the rankings, while the DC Universe sequel is off to a much worse start than expected.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe is experiencing its first real slump.
Released this weekend in the United States, Supergirl starts with only $38 million in revenue in 3,602 American theaters. A launch far from catastrophic, but clearly below expectations for a production whose budget is estimated between 170 and 186 million dollars.
The film carried by Milly Alcock was obviously not expected at the level of Supermanwhich opened to $125 million last summer, but early projections still predicted around $50 million for its first weekend.
Compared to the last films of the previous DC Universe, The Kryptonian begins better thanAquaman and the Lost Kingdom (also with Jason Momoa in the cast, in another role), which started at 27 million dollars in 2023 (440 million worldwide at the end of the run). On the other hand, Supergirl remains below The Flash of 2023 (with another Kara played by Sasha Calle) and its 55 million dollars at start-up (270 million world at the end of her career).
It should also be noted that this new adaptation does much better than the first Supergirl worn by Helen Slater in 1984, which only grossed $5 million in its release weekend and ended its American career at $15 million.
Internationally, Craig Gillespie’s feature film grossed less than $70 million after its launch in 78 markets. However, it has not yet been released in several important territories, including France, where it will only arrive this Wednesday, July 1.
In the meantime, Kara Zor-El has failed to take control of the American box office, still dominated by Woody and his gang.
Toy Story 5 maintains the lead with a second weekend of more than $70 million (-56%). The Pixar film is already approaching $300 million in revenue in the United States after only ten days of operation, a record for the franchise: neither Toy Story 3 neither Toy Story 4 had not reached this milestone until their third weekend. On a global scale, the film has already reached almost $600 million in revenue and is already preparing to enter the Top 5 at the box office for the year 2026.
Still impressive, the horrific phenomenon Obsession completes the podium with an additional 9.8 million dollars (-30%) and an American total of 234 million dollars after seven weeks of operation and more than 370 million overall.
Behind, the last film in the saga Jackass: Best and Last begins with a very average launch with 8.2 million dollars, well below the standards of the daredevil gang. The public aged 25-34 alone represents 37% of entries.
In fifth position, Disclosure Day by Steven Spielberg continues to resonate. The film fell by 56% in the third week with only 8 million dollars and still has not reached 100 million in revenue on American soil nor 200 million worldwide.
Finally, the phenomenon Backrooms he is also starting to show signs of running out of breath. The film only collected $4 million this weekend (-44%), but still posted a solid $184 million in the United States after five weeks.
