Already 2.5 million entries for Michael in France

Michael surpasses Oppenheimer to become the biggest biopic of all time

After dethroning Freddie Mercury and Bohemian Rhapsody to become the biggest musical biopic in history, Michael Jackson is doubling down on the film dedicated to Robert Oppenheimer.

New coronation for the king of pop.

The biopic dedicated to Michael Jackson continues to make box office history and has just broken a record size: with $977 million in worldwide revenue, Michael is now the biggest biopic of all time!

The film thus goes beyond Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, who until then held the record with $975 million in worldwide revenue. A performance all the more impressive since Antoine Fuqua’s feature film had already dethroned Bohemian Rhapsody ($911 million) to become the biggest musical biopic in history.

Released in April, Michael grossed $607.2 million internationally and $370.2 million in the United States. Its launch had already been exceptional with 97 million dollars in American revenue and 217 million worldwide in its first weekend, shattering the previous record for a musical biopic, held by Straight Outta Compton and its 60 million dollars in 2015.

Buoyed by excellent word of mouth and numerous repeat screenings, the film continued to perform well throughout the summer despite fierce competition.

Another achievement: Michael also becomes the biggest success in the history of the Lionsgate studio, surpassing Hunger Games: Catching Firewhich ended its run at $865 million in 2013.

Faced with such a triumph, the studio is already considering giving the green light to at least one other film dedicated to the singer’s life. Michael 2 now seems inevitable.
