Bernadette: Catherine Deneuve Imperial (review)

Since her film debut in the 1950s, Catherine Deneuve has enjoyed a unique film career. The actress with her iconic hair stood out with her whimsical incarnations that allowed her to think outside the box. The selection offered by the Franco-German channel illustrates this eclecticism well, drawing roles from different eras of its busy filmography.

The channel begins its cycle on the evening of Sunday October 22 with Potiche (2010) by François Ozon, director accustomed to invoking Catherine Deneuve in his works. The black and white film, The good life (1966) by Jean-Paul Reppeneau will be broadcast the next day. The race continues with the moving She leaves (2013) by Emmanuelle Bercot, where a sixty-year-old experiences an invigorating road trip.

Key films in the actress’s filmography such as Donkey Skin (1970) by Jacques Demy, are accessible on the platform arte.tv until November 30, just like Repulsion (1965) by Roman Polanski, available until January 31, 2024. Dancing in the Dark (2000), the original musical comedy by Lars Von Trier, broadcast last night on the channel, can be viewed for free in replay until April 12, 2024. It makes the link with another cycle dedicated to the Danish director.

Beyond fiction, the documentary Catherine Deneuve, in her image, by Claire Laborey will be broadcast on Sunday 22 at 10:40 p.m. and therefore available online from October 15 to November 20. The filmmaker brings together several archives remembering the journey of the woman who was first considered by this phlegmatic blonde figure. Film extracts, filming images and interviews bear witness to the talent and flexibility of the most French actress. In a more recent project by Léa Domenach, Catherine Deneuve plays on her agility as an interpreter by diving into the printed suit of Bernadette Chirac, first lady of France.
