Whether Barbie only released this Friday in the United States, it arrived on French screens on Wednesday. And his colossal promotion is already crowned with success: he signs the second best start of the year for his first day in theaters.
Greta Gerwig: “Ken is nothing without Barbie, he’s a hilarious and tragic figure”
Barbie attracts nearly 359,889 spectators (including previews), and becomes the second best launch of the year 2023 behind Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom by Guillaume Canet, which totaled 466,703 spectators on its debut to finish its race with 4,617,822 admissions, becoming at the same time the biggest French success of the year.
If we count only the day of Wednesday, the film by Greta Gerwig does however better than Asterix, with 268,359 tickets sold against 191,045. But it is slightly ahead of Super Mario Bros.which had sold 281,442 tickets on the Wednesday of its release.
Barbie is not alone at the top, however: another phenomenon film was eagerly awaited this Wednesday. This is’Oppenheimerthe new film by Christopher Nolan dedicated to the father of the atomic bomb, which attracted 159,674 spectators in theaters, signing the best start to the director’s career since the 208,180 admissions ofInception in 2010. In third place is The House of Evil of the Frenchman Samuel Bodin who comes to give cold sweats to 14,036 people.
Greta Gerwig’s film is therefore in a very good position to become one of the biggest hits of this year 2023. In the cast of this adaptation of the world of the doll, we find in particular Margot Robbie (also producer) and Ryan Gosling.
