These cult films from the 1990s can be seen at the same time on television. We will have to make a choice!
At 9:05 p.m., W9 will start the rebroadcast of Robin Hood, prince of thievesan adventure film by Kevin Reynolds (which the actor will find later for Waterworld) which stages Kevin CostnerMary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Morgan Freeman, Sean Connery, Alan Rickman and Christian Slater, in an epic wish-fulfilling take on the legends surrounding the man who stole from the rich to help the poor.
20 minutes later, TMC will dedicate its evening to Whitney Houston, offering Bodyguardthe romance directed by Mick Jackson in which Kevin Costner also played, then a documentary on the career of the singer who disappeared in 2012.
Or two particularly popular films by the 68-year-old actor.
In 1991, a year later the triumph of Dancing with the wolvesworn but also directed by Costner, Robin Hood was seen by nearly 5 million French people at the cinema, and in the rest of the world, it earned 390 million dollars for a budget of around 50 million. It was a huge success, which in turn contributed to the popularity of Bryan Adams, behind the film’s hit “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You”.
A year later, the success of Bodyguard was even crazier, since it passed 400 million dollars in worldwide revenue. With us, on the other hand, he remains behind The Prince of Thieves at the box office, with 3 million admissions. Which still represents an excellent score for Houston’s first film, which screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan had been trying to put together for several decades (it almost happened before the disappearance of Steve McQueen, who would have had Diana Ross as a partner). There too, this global hit was accompanied by musical success, “I Will Always Love You”.
Met in 2016 on the occasion of the release of CriminalKevin Costner said that Bodyguard had been so well received all over the world that during the following years, the producers of Warner Bros did not stop asking for a sequel.
“I’ve never done it. Never! I’ve never tried to duplicate my last success four times in a row. Or five times in a row. Or six times in a row… I’m not interested. Yet, I could have. At one time, one of my day jobs was to ensure that the continuation of Bodyguard does not exist. Especially not ! And believe me, it was hard work!”
He added, regarding the warm reception received by this film: “In the USA, Until the end of the dream is the one I hear about the most. The lines from the film are part of everyday language: ‘If you build it, it will come.’ But in the rest of the world, it’s as if he doesn’t exist. I get quoted more Bodyguard Or Dancing with the wolves.”
