Dream: a poetic and political road movie (critical)
The journey of a Palestinian child in search of his traveler pigeon. With the background the desire to show the still possible bridges between Israelis and Palestinians.
Rashid Masharawi – 2025, Act 2. We discovered on February 12 From Ground Zerothe documentary that this native of Gaza had initiated around the essential role played by cinema in wartime. This brought together 22 very short films (of less than ten minutes), staged in the Gaza Strip by Gazaouis, with the means at hand, after the attacks of October 7, 2023. And it made it possible to put faces on figures, personal stories on events, that neither the history manuals, nor the media, will be able to transcribe with as much accuracy.
With DreamRashid Masharawi this time takes the prism of fiction to tell this corner of the world where tragedies succeed tragedies. We follow a very young Palestinian of 12 years who, in search of his traveler pigeon seeming to have made the trunk, undertakes a journey in Volkswagen combi of the refugee camp where he lives to Haifa via Jerusalem. And Masharawi is based on this relatively classic narrative spine to multiply the swolders, according to the mini-history of each of the characters crossed on the road that he takes the time to develop.
All with playful sweetness and a desire to show the still possible bridges between Israelis and Palestinians who make it a real political gesture because in reverse of the ambient climate. Because indignation and anger here give way to other weapons: those of love and poetry, with the pigeon as a metaphor for the uprooting of a people.
By Rashid Masharawi. With Ashraf Barhom, Aseel Abu Ayyash, Emilia Al Massou … Duration 1h25. Released April 2, 2025
