Drive out of Mandalorian, Gina Carano settles her accounts with Disney
That said, Cara Dune should not return to Star Wars.
The legal litigation between Gina Carano and Disney/Lucasfilm is officially enclosed. Three years after her controversial eviction of The Mandalorian, the actress found an agreement with the producers of the Star Wars series, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed. The details of the agreement were not revealed.
In a press release, Lucasfilm said:
“We have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to solve the problems related to her complaint against our companies. Ms. Carano has always been respected by her directors, partners and colleagues, and she worked hard to perfect her art while dealing with others with kindness and respect. Now that this trial is finished, we hope to be able to collaborate with Mrs. Carano in the near future.”
For his part, Carano also expressed himself: “I have reached an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm which seems to me to be the best outcome for all the parties concerned. I hope it will bring a little healing to force … I am impatient to turn the page and start a new chapter. My desire remains to express myself in the arts, and I hope you will follow me on this path.”
Recall that Gina Carano embodied Cara Dune, ex-rebel trooper shocking that has become marshal for the New Republic, in the first two seasons of Mandalorian. She was even expected for her own spin-off, before being dismissed in February 2021 for a series of controversial posts on social networks, deemed transphobic, racists, conspirators and anti-Semites. A #FireGinacarano campaign had then been launched, and Lucasfilm had estimated that his publications “denigrated people because of their cultural and religious identity, which is repugnant and unacceptable.”
Carano countered in February 2024, fileing a complaint for abusive dismissal, denouncing an attack on his freedom of expression, and claiming that Disney had “taken reprisal measures to harm his reputation and limit his professional opportunities.”
The agreement does not seem to include a return to the Star Wars universe: in season 3, Cara Dune is mentioned as having been recruited by the special forces of the New Republic, without appearing on the screen. It remains to be seen whether The Mandalorian & Grogu, the film scheduled for next May, will change the situation.
