Elizabeth Olsen only wants to star in films that will be released in theaters
The Marvel actress will be in theaters this December for an A24 romantic comedy.
Elizabeth Olsen says it loud and clear: there is no longer any question for her of acting in studio films that would not be released in the cinema.
In a long interview given to InStylethe actress explains that she will no longer sign for a project whose release would only be limited to streaming:
“If a film is produced independently and ends up being sold to a platform, fine. But I don’t want to do something where streaming is an end in itself. It’s important that people come together, see each other, share a moment in the same place. That’s what I love about sport. It’s powerful to come together around something we’re excited about. Today, we don’t even audition in person anymore…”
Since her last appearance as the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), Olsen has refocused her career on independent projects, but linked to streaming. His three daughters (2023) was released on Netflix but had a limited theatrical release in the United States. The Assessment (2024) had been put online by Prime Video in France, and in a good part of the world, but was still released in theaters in the USA. His next project Eternityan A24 romantic comedy starring Miles Teller and Callum Turner, set in the afterlife, where souls have one week to choose who to spend eternity with, will only be released in cinemas (December 3, 2025 in France).
As for whether she will one day return as Wanda Maximoff in the Marvel Universe, Elizabeth Olsen says nothing, but admits: “Shooting these films is fun, completely crazy. We’re adults playing pretend on a playground. We fly, we pull things with our hands… He’s a character that I was lucky enough to meet for more than ten years. When I leave her, I miss her, and I want to find her again. I would jump at the chance if she came back. Because it also means having consistency in employment and within a community, which is rare in our environment. The stunts, the special effects, the coordination between hundreds of people… it’s a huge thing. All these artists working together is strong. There is a soul, a heart, a spirit behind it all.” And for now, for the moment, Marvel films are all films for cinema’s sake!
