George RR Martin announces three Game of Thrones animated series

The spin-off dedicated to Corlys Velaryon, aka The Sea Serpent, will not be done in live action.

While he has just discovered Blue Eye Samurai on Netflix, George RR Martin is in the mood to talk animation. And the creator of Iron Throne reveals, on his blog, new plans for the expansion of the world of Game Of Thrones on HBO.

“Actually, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of ‘A Song Of Ice & Fire.’ None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we’re about to take the next step with a few.”

Among these projects, we find the series Nine Journeys, dedicated to the Sea Snake. Previously announced as a prequel spin-off dedicated to the character of House of the DragonCorlys Velaryon, this new series Game Of Thrones will therefore not be done in live action but in an animated version. For financial reasons:

“We decided to pass Nine Journeys, our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Serpent, from live-action to animation. A decision that I fully support. Budgetary constraints would probably have made a live action version prohibitive, since half the show will take place at sea and this would require creating a different port each week, from Driftmark to Lys via the islands of Basilisk, Volantis and Qarth… It there’s a whole world there. And we’re much more likely to show everything with animation. So we now have three animated projects in progress.”

George RR Martin says no more. We don’t know what the other two mysterious animated series mentioned are. But many spin-off projects in Westeros have already been mentioned. HBO could decide to boost its animation category thanks to them.
