HBO extends the Game of Thrones universe until 2028. And after?
Two series are renewed by the channel, and other spin-offs are currently in development.
The Game of Thrones franchise has been a pillar of HBO’s strategy for almost 15 years, and it’s not about to stop. Casey Bloys, the big boss of the network, announced this Thursday during a press conference organized in New York the renewal of the two series derived from GOT.
House of the Dragon will thus be entitled to a season 4 in 2028. It is validated even before the broadcast of season 3, scheduled for summer 2026, but this is not really a surprise. The other still unreleased spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is also renewed, a few weeks before its launch, on January 19, 2026 on HBO Max. Season 2 of the adventures of Dunk and Egg will arrive on our screens in 2027.
“We are delighted to offer fans of the Game of Thrones universe new seasons of these two series for the next three years,” said vice-president Francesca Orsi. “House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms demonstrate how vast and incredibly rich the universe imagined by George RR Martin remains. Starting in January, audiences will discover the inspiring story of Dunk and Egg, beautifully adapted by George and Ira Parker. And this summer, House of the Dragon will once again thrill screens with some of its most spectacular battles.”
Fans are therefore guaranteed to get their dose of GOT until 2028. And after? Season 4 will conclude the adventure of House of the Dragon. This was Martin’s original plan, and showrunner Ryan Condal confirmed it last year after the conclusion of season 2.
As for the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series, it is based on the short novels Tales of Dunk and Egg, written by GRRM, and it should last three seasons (if all goes well), or one by one book. It remains to be seen how the public will receive this 30-minute format, with a more modest budget (10 million per episode compared to 20 for House of the Dragon).
We can imagine that HBO wants to find a new epic show capable of taking over from House of the Dragon. Other past stories discussed in the books have this potential, such as the tale of Aegon’s conquest, which allowed House Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne for two centuries. And George RR Martin confirmed this week that things were in the works, reports the Winter is Coming website:
“Aside from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spin-offs in development. Most of them are prequels. There are five or six series in development, and I’m not developing them alone, I’m working with other people. Yes, there are sequels too.”
Suffice to say that Martin is not 100% on Winds of Winter, the 6th volume of Game of Thrones that readers have been waiting for years…
