Jim Carrey back as Grinch? A sequel to the cult film is in preparation
27 years after terrorizing the residents of Chouville, Jim Carrey could well put on the green suit again. Universal is currently working on a sequel with Ron Howard returning to direct.
Will he try to steal Christmas a second time?
Universal and Imagine Entertainment are currently developing a sequel to the cult 2000s film, The Grinch (How the Grinch Stole Christmas), the live-action adaptation of the famous Dr. Seuss tale. And obviously, it would be with Jim Carrey back in the green suit, while Ron Howard would return behind the camera, he who had already signed the film at the time.
Producer Brian Grazer, co-founder of Imagine Entertainment, would also be there.
Nothing has been signed yet, negotiations are underway, but the project is moving forward.
The screenplay was entrusted to Alec Berg, known for his work on the HBO series Barry And Silicon Valleysupported by Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, two veterans of the cult Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry and his belly button).
When it was released in 2000, The Grinch had been a huge worldwide success with more than $350 million in worldwide revenue. The film has since become a holiday classic. Two decades later, Universal released an animated feature film version of the Grinch (in 2018).
In recent years, Jim Carrey had already hinted that he would be open to a return. The actor, however, explained that the heavy makeup of the first film had been particularly trying and that today he would prefer to use more motion capture.
While waiting to see the project come to fruition, he will already find another of his emblematic characters since he will reprise the role of Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 4expected in 2027 in cinemas.
