La Bola Negra unveils its impressive trailer
This historical and queer drama marked the last Cannes Film Festival and is a favorite for the Oscars.
After the impressive series La Mesias (currently available on MUBI), the Spanish director duo Los Javis (Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo) struck a big blow with The Black Bolaone of the most anticipated films of the end of the year. A huge hit in Spain, where it has already attracted 1.3 million spectators in one week, it will be released in France on December 16, distributed by Le Pacte (also co-producer), opposite Dune 3 And Avengers: Doomsday.
Half arthouse film, half blockbuster, The Black Bola tells the destiny of three men over three eras (1932, 1937, 2017). This historical drama inspired by the unfinished novel by Federico García Lorca (The Black Ball) explores strong themes (homosexuality, the Spanish Civil War, inheritance) with a remarkable aesthetic proposition. Competing for the Palme d’Or, Los Javis left the last Cannes Film Festival with the directing prize.
From, The Black Bola also won the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival and San Sebastian, and is already positioning itself as one of the favorites for the Oscars. And not just for best international film. Netflix, which distributes it in the United States (47 days in theaters before releasing it in streaming, a record), will lead a major campaign to try to raise it to the supreme award.
To carry out this ultra-ambitious project, Los Javis surrounded their young actors (Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González, Milo Quifes) with big names from Spanish and international cinema: Penélope Cruz, Lola Dueñas, Glenn Close and Antonio de la Torre. Trailer:
