Lady Gaga wowed the casting director of Joker: Folie à Deux

“She is truly amazing – and very talented.”

At many times, Lady Gaga has proven to audiences that she is more than just a popular, multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and performer. Stefani Germanotta is also an actress – and not just any actress. First noticed in season five of the anthology series American Horror Story, Earning her the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series, her career exploded in Hollywood with A Star Is Born. The film earned her a Golden Globe and an Oscar for original music, as well as a nomination for best actress. She recently showcased her acting talents for Top Gun 2: Maverickhis last appearance on the big screen dates back to House of Guccithree years ago. Again, two nominations for the star. Acclaimed for her acting talents, Lady Gaga could surprise us again with the role of the crazy lovestruck Harley Quinn in Joker: Madness for Two.

And to confirm this, who could be better placed than the casting director of the film. Present at the International Film Festival organized in the Czech Republic, Karlovy Vary could not hide her enthusiasm for the singer’s performance: “She is really made for this role. She will amaze you.“

The main choice of director Todd Philipps, Lady Gaga was not initially considered for this role by the casting director. But the latter had to bow to her talent:

“I’ll tell you, she’s really amazing – and very talented. I saw her and I was extremely surprised. I mean, we all knew she could do it. A Star is Born, But I was like, ‘Well, this is something she knows.’ Something she could do and make real. But this… Damn, she’s really good at it. Joaquin blew you away, but the fact that she can live up to him, be real – and not just fade away on screen behind the role and what it symbolizes – shows how talented she is.”

While Joaquin Phoenix had hit the mark by playing the supervillain with a big smile, leaving with his arms full of trophies including the BAFTA, the Golden Globe and the Oscar for best actor, we can easily imagine that his acting partner could follow this royal path. Nothing very complicated for the one who was the first woman to win in one year: an Oscar, a Grammy Award, a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. And playing this character already immortalized by another famous actress, does not scare her. In an interview given to Access Hollywood Last May, Lady Gaga said:

“My version of Harley is personal, and it’s very true to what the movie is and what the characters are. I’ve never done anything like this, so it’s going to be completely new and a lot of fun.”

Joker: Madness for Two marks the return of Joaquin Phoenix as Joker. Released in 2019, Joker had been a triple triumph – at the box office, with critics and at major ceremonies. Locked in one of the cells of Arkham Asylum where the most insane characters languish, Arthur Fleck crosses paths with the one who will be his future partner in crime – Harley Quinn. Between them, it is mad and criminal love, and nothing will stop them. They plan an escape and stir up the crowds. Let’s call it the Gaga effect.

Expected to be presented as a preview at the Venice Film Festival, the film will be released in France on October 2, 2024.
