Lily Gladstone delivered a poignant speech in a Native American language at the Golden Globes
The Killers of the Flower Moon actress claimed the historic nature of her award.
During the Golden Globes, the 81st edition of which took place last night in Hollywood, Lily Gladstone was crowned best actress of the year in a drama film for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon of Martin Scorsese. In front of her stood Carey Mulligan (Maestro), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a fall), Annette Bening (Nyad), Greta Lee (Past Lives) And Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla).
The actress began her speech in a foreign language, that of the Blackfoot Indian reservation where she comes from. Even if she does not fully master the language, Lily Gladstone mentioned the interest in the survival of this dialect. The interpreter of Mollie Burkhart paid tribute to her mother, who is not indigenous, but who still contributed to the preservation of the language.
In addition, the actress claimed the historic nature of her award, and considers that it is not only a victory for her, but for all the Native American people who have not always been honored by cinema American.
“This is a historic award. It doesn’t just belong to me, I hold this award with my film sisters and my mother Tantoo Cardinal“said the actress.
The actress also thanked Leonardo DiCaprio, Martin Scorsese and the film team for bringing it to this award.

“I am so grateful to be able to express myself in my language, which I don’t speak fluently since in this industry, Native American actors are used to delivering the lines in English, and the sound engineers were used to editing backwards so it sounds like an indigenous language“, she denounced.
Lily Gladstonewho grew up on the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Montana, dedicated his award to “every child who grew up on reservations, every urban child, every indigenous child who has a dream, who sees themselves represented and our stories told by ourselves in our own words with allies and enormous trust with each other.”
