Mr. Scorsese: a documentary series not to be missed! (critical)
The journey of Martin Scorsese told in a whirlwind of distinguished guests, tasty anecdotes and songs by the Stones. Why shy away from your pleasure?
A documentary series on Martin Scorsese ? On paper, it didn’t seem essential, the author of Italianamerican being undoubtedly one of the filmmakers who has told the most about his life. However, from the first seconds of Mr. Scorsesepunctuated by the percussion of “Sympathy For The Devil”, we are gripped, embarked on a journey of almost five hours. Rebecca Miller rewrites the Scorsesian gesture in “full access” mode: confessions from the filmmaker (always so cool and talkative), archives in shambles, parade of prominent guests – Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio… The kind of people who say “Marty” rather than “Mr. Scorsese”.
However, they all manage to have the spotlight stolen by a certain Sally Gaga, the man who inspired the character of Johnny Boy in Mean Streets, who seems to have come straight out of an episode of The Sopranos and royally slaps himself in the middle of episode 2.
Mr. Scorsese places himself at the confluence of the big story (when Miller recalls the outburst of anti-Semitism which accompanied the release of The Last Temptation of Christ) and the intimate (with careful examination of Scorsese’s anger, his depressions, his failings as a father), without neglecting the pleasure of the fans (Mick Jagger discussing the use of the song “Long Long While” in Casino) and the most spectacular anecdotes.
Did you know, for example, that Scorsese wore a bulletproof vest under his tuxedo on Oscar night in 1981? If this kind of information electrifies you, this doc is for you.
By Rebecca Miller. 5 episodes. Available on Apple TV+ from October 17, 2025
